Two police officers in Malaysia were injured in a landslide while they were preparing to dispose of an old bomb in the Johor district of Kluang on Tuesday (Aug 27).
Kluang district police chief Bahrin Mohd Noh said in a statement that a bomb disposal unit from the Johor police contingent headquarters was dispatched to Taman Sri Lambak at about 8.50am after an old bomb was found there.
But at about 2.20pm, an emergency call was received from local police that a landslide had occurred at the bomb’s location.
Due to the collapse of a wall at the bomb disposal location, two members of the bomb disposal unit were buried and suffered injuries, Bahrin said.
The two policemen were rescued and sent to the Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Kluang Hospital for treatment.
One officer, 34, fractured his left femur and a left rib. Meanwhile, the second officer, 39, broke his hip bone and three left ribs.
Both are in stable condition and receiving further treatment.
Some Malaysian media had initially reported the landslide was due to the bomb’s detonation, but Bahrin clarified that the incident occurred while the policemen were preparing to dispose of the bomb.
According to the New Straits Times, the injured policemen are Corporal Muhammad Faruuqi Shamsary, 34, and Sergeant Abdul Halim Zainal, 39.
